Fall Activities for Upper Elementary Gifted and Talented Students

Fall is a great time to bring a little seasonal fun into your classroom while still challenging your upper elementary gifted students. If you’re looking for engaging ELA, math, and STEM activities that encourage creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving, here are some of my favorite fall ideas to try with your students.

ELA Activities

School Socratic Seminar

Engage students in meaningful debate with timely debates about school. Should students be allowed to have phones in school? Should there be more recess? What are the benefits? What are the concerns? In these Socratic Seminars, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students will read all about the pros and cons of each issue and form an opinion. They will then cite evidence from the text to discuss and debate their points of view and listen to the points of view of their classmates.

The typical format of a Socratic Seminar involves two circles. The inner circle participates in the discussion. The outer circle keeps track of the interactions between the group members. Students must think critically about the topic in order to analyze information on both sides of the issue. Fall Word Scramble

If you are looking for an activity for early finishers, try Fall Word Scramble. Choose an autumn word and rearrange the letters without telling students the beginning word. Challenge them to form as many real words as possible.

Students can work independently as an early finisher task, or you can turn the activity into a collaborative game for small groups or even the whole class. Students earn one point for each letter in a credible word (no proper nouns or abbreviations). The open-ended format encourages flexible thinking, perseverance, and creative problem-solving, making it a meaningful and low-prep option for ELA enrichment.

Scarecrow Point of View Writing

Scarecrow Point of View Writing is a fun way to bring creativity into your fall ELA activities while strengthening narrative writing skills. In this activity, students write a story from a scarecrow’s perspective. They might imagine a scarecrow watching over a busy pumpkin patch, trying to protect the crops from clever crows, getting ready for the first frost, or discovering that something unexpected has happened in the field. Writing from the scarecrow’s point of view encourages students to think about voice, perspective, and character motivations.

For an extra challenge, students can write the same event from two different perspectives, such as the scarecrow and a crow trying to sneak into the field. Then, they can compare how each character experiences and interprets the same event. This activity gives students a creative way to practice narrative writing while developing a deeper understanding of point of view and perspective.

Fall Logic Puzzles

Math logic puzzles are a must-have for challenging high-achieving students. In these puzzles, symbols replace numbers, and students must use their knowledge of equations and operations to determine each symbol’s value. This type of problem-solving encourages critical thinking, strengthens algebraic reasoning, and provides a fun, hands-on way to deepen understanding. Learn more in the Using Math Logic Puzzles post.

These Fall Multiplication and Division Logic Puzzles are designed to engage and challenge advanced math students. After students solve twelve puzzles where pictures take the place of numbers, they are then ready to extend their learning by designing their own logic puzzles to challenge their classmates. Students can create, solve, and self-assess their puzzles using the provided rubric.

Pumpkin Patch Project-Based Learning

Students can plan a fun trip to a local pumpkin patch while working within a set budget. They must research and calculate the costs of admission, food, and rides, making thoughtful decisions to stay within their spending limit. This activity strengthens math skills, budgeting, and real-world problem-solving as students compare prices, prioritize expenses, and explore trade-offs. It also encourages creativity and planning, as they design a memorable outing while practicing important financial literacy skills.

Print the prices for admission, rides, and food from your local pumpkin patch. Give students a budget and tell them that they are responsible for planning a trip for their family. They should create a schedule and a budget for the outing. Design a Corn Maze

In this fun math activity, students get to design their own corn maze while practicing their understanding of angles. Challenge them to create a maze that includes acute, right, and obtuse angles and has a clear path from the entrance to the exit. Once their maze is finished, students identify and label the different types of angles they included. It’s a fun, creative way to get students working with angles while giving them plenty of freedom to make their maze their own.

Build a Scarecrow

Can you design a scarecrow that can stand up to the wind? In this fall-themed STEM challenge, students use the engineering design process to create a scarecrow that is tall, stable, and strong enough to withstand increasing amounts of wind. With limited materials, students will plan their design, build a prototype, test it with a fan, and make improvements based on what they discover. It’s a fun, hands-on way for students to explore stability, balance, and forces while getting into the fall spirit!

Apple Science Investigation

What happens when you put a piece of apple in different liquids? In this simple fall science investigation, students place pieces of apple into several different liquids, such as water, salt water, lemon juice, soda, oil, or vinegar, and observe what happens over time. Before starting, students make predictions about which liquid will cause the apple to change the most and record their observations throughout the investigation. They can look for changes in color, texture, size, and appearance and then compare their results.

For an added challenge, have students explain why they think some liquids caused more noticeable changes and design a follow-up investigation by changing one variable. They might test whether the temperature of the liquid, the concentration of the solution, the type or size of the apple, or the amount of time the apple is submerged affects the results. Students could even choose their own variable and design an experiment to test it. For another fun extension, repeat the investigation with pieces of pumpkin and compare it to the apple results.

Apple Picker

Imagine you’re an apple farmer, but the apples are growing way too high to reach! In this challenge, students design and build a tool that allows them to pick an apple without touching it with their hands. They can use simple materials such as craft sticks, straws, cups, string, rubber bands, and cardboard to create a long-reaching grabber or another creative solution. Once their tool is built, students test it by trying to reach an apple hanging from a classroom “tree,” grab it, and bring it safely back to the ground. Students can then make changes to their designs and try again to see if they can make their apple picker stronger, easier to use, or able to reach apples at different heights.
