The Importance of Gifted and Talented Programs

Gifted and talented classroom

Gifted and talented programs are essential to meet the academic, social-emotional, and engagement requirements that are unique to gifted students.

My child’s school just posted a job description for their new gifted and talented teacher position. It states “we believe all students, both identified and regular education students, should have an opportunity to benefit from additional instruction.” It goes on to say “all students at the elementary and middle schools levels (will be provided) additional enrichment opportunities.”

As the parent of a gifted child, and a gifted educator, this posting made me concerned. Gifted students have unique needs that are different from others. They deserve a teacher that is devoted to them and their unique needs.

A special education teacher would never be asked to serve all students. We recognize that some students need additional help to make academic progress. So why do we think that all students deserve additional enrichment opportunities to meet their needs? Gifted programming is essential to meet academic and social-emotional needs and keep students engaged in their learning.

Meet Academic Needs

First and foremost, gifted and talented programs meet the academic needs of our highest ability learners. These students exceed grade level expectations and their classroom teachers often do not have the time or resources to devote to students that are already meeting end of year expectations. The gifted and talented program can help these students still make academic growth by exposing them to new skills and learning opportunities.

Meet Social-Emotional Needs

Gifted students often have unique social-emotional needs. They benefit from a program that can address and teach coping strategies for asynchronous development, perfectionism, and developing peer relationships. Gifted students also benefit from being in a small group setting with like ability peers. Other gifted learners can challenge their ideas, share their own understanding, and collaborate on projects equally.

Stay Engaged

Gifted and talented students are often bored in their regular classrooms. Students often tune out when they already know the content. Gifted programs give students the chance to learn more about their interests and engage in projects that suit their abilities.

Unfortunately, requirements and funding for gifted and talented programs still vary from place to place. It is essential that we meet the needs of these students everywhere.
